Mother Nature’s Summer Palette

As we head into another heatwave, it’s that glorious time of year when our gardens burst into colour. I marvelled at the gorgeous rich colours on my recent trip to Spain and I relish the sight of the bright pinks, oranges and purples when I get a rare moment of peace in the garden at home too.

Colour plays such an important part in our art and summer creations seems to glow with an extra zing and fizz! Powertex art supplies are so versatile, I love using the bright jewel colours of the acrylic inks and paints to create a striking canvas or sculpture.

The range of jewel coloured acrylic paints come in ‘yummy’ vibrant colours called Blueberry Pie, Mint Jelly and Plum Pudding, there are also the metallic acrylic inks in Copper Penny, Silver Sixpence and Coral Pearl.

AND… I have just received three brand new Powertex pigment colours – Powereffect Exterior Green, Powereffect Turquoise and Powereffect Super Violet. These metallic pigments colour as mother of pearl on a white or light surface and show their true colours on a black or dark background.

Taking the floral theme to new heights, Powertex rice papers are a simple and very effective way to create the garden of your dreams in your artwork. There are lots of different flower designs to choose from – roses, lilies, sunflowers and daisies. There are also some lovely silicon moulds to create floral embellishments in roses, pansies and daisies, perfect for texture and detail.

I recreate the earthy colours of our countryside with bister sprays for that dry crackle effect. Made from walnut inks, the yellow, red and mahogany are great. As I try new techniques, I also love to take inspiration for amazing textures from bark or grains of sand and rock formations.

One of my favourite textures is bark and the natural dried and pressed mulberry wood paper deco dipped in Powertex stretched out, makes for a brilliant texture relief effect. Adding in the other colours of paper deco, like grey, green, red or burgundy creates a fabulous piece of ‘bark’.

The next chance I get for some studio time, I’ll be experimenting with these glorious colours and textures.
